Ureterolithiasis after Cohen re-implantation – case report
BACKGROUND: In the past decades, the widespread use of cross-trigonal ureteral reimplants for the treatment of children with vesicoureteral reflux has resulted in a large population of patients with transversely lying ureters. As this population gets older they will consequently be entering an age group at higher risk for stone and urothelial cancer formation. If ureteroscopy becomes necessary, the transverse position of the ureter makes ureteric access often impossible. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a young man who not only suffered from urolithiasis due to hyperparathyroidism, but also further jeopardized his treatment by omitting the fact that as a child he underwent Cohen reimplantation of the right ureter. CONCLUSIONS: This case illustrates the particular difficulties the endoscopist may face in this group of patients. Patients with difficult ureteric access, abnormal anatomy, or those with known cross-trigonal ureteric reimplantations should be managed in a specialised endourology unit
Exploring the canonical behaviour of long gamma-ray bursts with an intrinsic multiwavelength afterglow correlation
In this conference proceeding we examine a correlation between the afterglow luminosity (measured at restframe 200 s; logL200s) and average afterglow decay rate (measured from restframe 200 s onwards; α>200s) found in both the optical/UV and X-ray afterglows of long duration Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). Examining the X-ray light curves, we find the correlation does not depend on the presence of specific light curve features. We explore how the parameters in the optical/UV and X-ray bands relate to each other and to the prompt emission phase. We also use a Monte Carlo simulation to explore whether these relationships are consistent with predictions of the standard afterglow model. We conclude that the correlations are consistent with a common underlying physical mechanism producing GRBs and their afterglows regardless of their detailed temporal behaviour. However, a basic afterglow model has difficulty explaining correlations involving α>200s. We therefore briefly discuss alternative more complex models
Protective effect of carboxymethyl-glucan (CM-G) against DNA damage in patients with advanced prostate cancer
Carboxymethyl-glucan (CM-G) is a soluble derivative from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (1 → 3)(1 → 6)-β-D-glucan. The protective efficiency of CM-G against DNA damage in cells from patients with advanced prostate cancer (PCa), and undergoing Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT), was evaluated. DNA damage scores were obtained by the comet assay, both before and after treatment with CM-G. The reduction in DNA damage, ranging from 18% to 87%, with an average of 59%, was not related to the increased number of leukocytes in peripheral blood. The results demonstrate for the first time the protective effect of CM-G against DNA damage in patients with advanced PCa. Among smokers, three presented the highest reduction in DNA damage after treatment with CM-G. There was no observable relationship between DNA damage scores before and after treatment, and age, alcoholism and radiotherapy
CRIPTO and its signaling partner GRP78 drive the metastatic phenotype in human osteotropic prostate cancer
CRIPTO (CR-1, TDGF1) is a cell surface/secreted oncoprotein actively involved in development and cancer. Here, we report that high expression of CRIPTO correlates with poor survival in stratified risk groups of prostate cancer (PCa) patients. CRIPTO and its signaling partner glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) are highly expressed in PCa metastases and display higher levels in the metastatic ALDHhigh sub-population of PC-3M-Pro4Luc2 PCa cells compared with non-metastatic ALDHlow. Coculture of the osteotropic PC-3M-Pro4Luc2 PCa cells with differentiated primary human osteoblasts induced CRIPTO and GRP78 expression in cancer cells and increases the size of the ALDHhigh sub-population. Additionally, CRIPTO or GRP78 knockdown decreases proliferation, migration, clonogenicity and the size of the metastasis-initiating ALDHhigh sub-population. CRIPTO knockdown reduces the invasion of PC-3M-Pro4Luc2 cells in zebrafish and inhibits bone metastasis in a preclinical mouse model. These results highlight a functional role for CRIPTO and GRP78 in PCa metastasis and suggest that targeting CRIPTO/GRP78 signaling may have significant therapeutic potential.Oncogene advance online publication, 10 April 2017; doi:10.1038/onc.2017.87
A review of data mining in knowledge management: applications/findings for transportation of small and medium enterprises
A core subfeld of knowledge management (KM) and data mining (DM) constitutes an integral part of the knowledge
discovery in database process. With the explosion of information in the new digital age, research studies in the DM and
KM continue to heighten up in the business organisations, especially so, for the small and medium enterprises (SMEs). DM
is crucial in supporting the KM application as it processes the data to useful knowledge and KM role next, is to manage
these knowledge assets within the organisation systematically. At the comprehensive appraisal of the large enterprise
in the transportation sector and the SMEs across various industries—it was gathered that there is limited research case
study conducted on the application of DM–KM on the transportation SMEs in specifc. From the extensive review of the
case studies, it was uncovered that majority of the organisations are not leveraging on the use of tacit knowledge and
that the SMEs are adopting a more traditional use of ICTs to its KM approach. In addition, despite DM–KM is being widely
implemented—the case studies analysis reveals that there is a limitation in the presence of an integrated DM–KM assessment to evaluate the outcome of the DM–KM application. This paper concludes that there is a critical need for a novel
DM–KM assessment plan template to evaluate and ensure that the knowledge created and implemented are usable and
relevant, specifcally for the SMEs in the transportation sector. Therefore, this research paper aims to carry out an in-depth
review of data mining in knowledge management for SMEs in the transportation industry
Limits on Anomalous Triple Gauge Couplings in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present a search for anomalous triple gauge couplings (ATGC) in WW and WZ
boson production. The boson pairs are produced in ppbar collisions at
sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, and the data sample corresponds to 350 pb-1 of integrated
luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. In this
search one W decays to leptons, and the other boson (W or Z) decays
hadronically. Combining with a previously published CDF measurement of Wgamma
boson production yields ATGC limits of -0.18 < lambda < 0.17 and -0.46 < Delta
kappa < 0.39 at the 95% confidence level, using a cut-off scale Lambda=1.5 TeV.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
